About City Palace

The magnificent City Palace is a more than 400 year old historic complex located on the banks of Lake Pichola. With its architectural beauty, adorned niches complimenting with beautiful pavilions and gardens, the beginning of the construction of this palace is defensive in every aspect.

The construction was started in 1559 CE, by the farsightedness of Mewar ruler; Maharana Udai Singh II. He chose this location to safeguard his kingdom along with the people and developed this lake as an escape route. Next of his 35 generations have contributed to this palace in one way or another.

The best time to visit the City Palace depends on your personal preferences and interests. However, the most popular time to visit is during the monsoon and winter months from August to March when the weather is cool and pleasant, and the monsoon is breathtaking here. The palace hosts several events and cultural programs throughout the year and continues as a part of the living heritage in India.

The City Palace in Udaipur can be reached by various modes of transportation.

If you’re coming from outside Udaipur, the nearest airport is Maharana Pratap Airport, which is about 25 km away. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to the palace.

 

If you’re traveling by train, Udaipur railway station is the closest station, located about 4 km away from the palace. From there, you can take a taxi, auto-rickshaw or local bus to reach the palace.

 

Alternatively, you can also hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw if you’re already in Udaipur and want to go directly to the palace.
