What is Holi, and why is it celebrated?

Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, Love, and Spring, is a popular Hindu festival celebrated on the full moon day- Phalgun (March) in India by all the Indians with zest and zeal worldwide. People wear white clothes, throw gulal (colors), and use water guns, water balloons, and wet sprays. Women cook delicious foods like Ghewar, Thandai, Gujiya, Matthi, Bhajiya, Bhang drinks, etc. 

Mythologically, Holi also commemorates a legendary victory of good over evil. The story is that an evil king- Hiranyakashipu, tried to rule forever. But his son Prahlad, a devotee of the Lord Vishnu, resists him. Bhagwan Vishnu took the form of Lord Narasimha and defeated the king. 

Holika Dahan takes place the night before Holi, signifying the burning of evil. It also marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It’s a time to celebrate fertility, new beginnings, and the vibrant colors of the blooming season.

Dos and Don’ts for a Safe and Fun Holi in Udaipur:

Do’s

• Wear comfortable, old clothes and opt for white or light-colored clothing that will show off the colors more vibrantly.

• Apply coconut oil or lotion to your hair and exposed skin to make colors easier to remove later. Wear sunglasses and a bandana or cap to protect your eyes and head.

• Use only organic, eco-friendly, and non-toxic colors. Avoid harsh colors that can irritate skin or eyes. Not everyone wants to participate. Don’t force colors on people who seem hesitant or uncomfortable.

• Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water. Indulge in delicious traditional Holi delicacies like Gujiya, Dahi Bhalla, and Thandai. Pack a small bag with essentials like sunscreen, a water bottle, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer.

What to skip?

• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption to stay safe and responsible. Avoid chemical-based colors that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

• Try to minimize water usage. Use buckets or water guns instead of open hoses. Don’t throw colors at public buildings, monuments, or vehicles. 

• Holi is a time for fun, not aggression. Be mindful of others’ boundaries. Don’t chase people around to drench them in colors.

• Dispose of empty color packets and leftover food responsibly in designated bins. Respect local customs and avoid playing with colors late at night.
